HOW DID YOU GET THE IDEA FOR YOUR AWARD WINNING BOOK? 
I always loved the name Corinne and saved it in my mind as a name if I ever had a 4th daughter….
Erin, Shannon, Meghan, and Corinne?

WHICH OF YOUR CHARACTERS FROM YOUR AWARD WINNING TITLE DO YOU BELIEVE IS MOST LIKE YOU AND WHY? 
I identify with Corinne in several ways in that I have had challenges to face and adapt accordingly.
I hope that readers will adapt to whatever they may view as a loss and rise above it, change their thinking, and move forward!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LINE FROM YOUR AWARD WINNING BOOK? 
My favorite sentence of the book is the final one. “Corinne was FREE, free to be her new self from fin to fin!”

TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE AS A WRITER: 
I was a teacher of young children for 50 years. The children in my class loved stories and I learned to create stories of my own in various ways just by being with them day by day.

As a child, I always loved books with a profound message like The Little Engine that Could. I also admired stories full of creativity like the Bee Tree by Patricia Polacco.

Little by little, Corinne has become very alive to me as we have traveled from one book event to another. I feel as if a true friend, Corinne, is with me in the car and at the book table.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR WRITING PROCESS:
As a writer, I often write the first draft in a busy place, like a café or library. I am able to block out all the surrounding noise or activity and focus on the story at hand. Revisions are usually done at home on my computer during a quiet setting.

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGE AS A WRITER?
My challenge as a writer is to leave room for the illustrator for I often SEE all the illustrations in my mind and will specify the details in indirect ways.

WHO HAS HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR WRITING STYLE?
Watty Piper inspired me as a child with The Little Engine That Could and still does, for he inspires children to continue to believe even though it may be hard to do so. My stories are intended to leave a lasting message for children long after the book is closed.

HOW DID YOU GET PUBLISHED?
I was connected to Cathy Teets of Headline Books for many years as members of the red clay tennis courts in Mountain Lake Maryland and a local real estate company. Years later I contacted her with my story called, Corinne’s Fin, and fortunately at that time she had an experienced illustrator, Ashley Teets. The beautiful illustrations in Corinne’s Fin speak for themselves in vivid color.

CAN YOU OFFER ANY ADVICE FOR WRITERS ON HOW BEST TO PROMOTE THEIR BOOK?
My advice would be to connect with your characters at various levels. Your character then becomes part of you which enables you to be passionate during book events; for you are speaking from the heart.

Awards are important in that they tend to bring recognition to your characters and your story. I was thrilled to win various awards: Literary Classics, Mom’s Choice, President’s Award, London Book Festival and others for Corinne’s Fin. Hopefully, the sequel, Coach Corinne, will continue to carry forth an inspiring message to young children.

DO YOU HAVE ANY NEW BOOKS IN THE WORKS? 
I have several picture books with an inspiring message for young children that I hope will be visible in print with accompanying illustrations in the near future.

I love calendars and planning for future fun and adventure. I can hardly contain my interest in many areas: grandchildren, writing, tennis, golf, gospel choir, nature, book clubs, learning, dinner clubs, birds, and the list goes on and on. Corinne’s Fin is also available on my website in addition to Headline Books. I have several picture books ready for submission. The future looks exciting!

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BEGIN WRITING? I began writing books for young readers as a young father and a second grade teacher.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR AWARD WINNING TITLE?

I was stuck on a historical piece about Babe Ruth when he was with the Yankees. As I did more research I became fascinated with Ruth's time in Boston pitching for the Red Sox.

IS THIS YOUR FIRST BOOK? Nope, it's my 24th book.

I'm a left-handed, double Gemini, that can't sit still.

WHAT DO YOU MOST ENJOY DOING IN YOUR SPARE TIME?

Ride my bicycle. I go out everyday for several miles. It's how I split my day in half: morning for writing; afternoon for guitar studies.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE TV SHOW/MOVIE?

PBS News Hour (it's the only thing I can stand to watch on TV)

WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU FACE AS AN AUTHOR?

Right now, it's the changing and quite turbulent publishing industry. Quite hard to navigate at the moment.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR OTHER ASPIRING AUTHORS?

Read, read, read,...and then write, write, write. There's no magic to it; just a lot of hard work that you can't avoid.  

​

CAN YOU OFFER ANY TIPS ON GETTING PUBLISHED?

Have a strategy and follow it. I work the trade and self-publishing angles at the same time. While I'm trying to sell my books to established publishers (20 to date), I'm always working on 1-2 self-publishing projects at the same time.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE WITH OUR READERS?

Regarding self-publishing, although it's more accessible and more affordable, it is not necessarily easier. In fact, it's more difficult because the author bears more of the responsibility to produce not only an accurate, but a beautifully crafted book. Knowing this, I take great care in producing my self-published works, which is reflected in my website's name:

Nicole Weaver has created a new counterpart to her award winning picture book, My Sister is My Best Friend.

My Brother is My Best Friend, is an enjoyable and easy read.  Two playful and inquisitive boys enjoy each other's company as they have fun and explore.  The book is told in three languages, English, Spanish & French.  Each language is highlighted in a different color, allowing the reader to differentiate between the languages.  This is a fun book to read, while at the same time helping readers to become immersed in the different languages.  The powerful bond of twin brothers is an undercurrent to this story, so non-twins would be equally as engaged by this book.

Sally Berenzweig, MEd, MA, Child Safety Expert, Mental Health Professional, Educator, Author, Public Speaker, Safety Expert on Facebook Safety and Jefferson Award Winner 2012 - Sally Berenzweig is a former Psychotherapist who has a Masters in Elementary Education and a Masters in Counseling Psychology. She has worked with survivors of sexual abuse as well as in private practice. She specializes in child safety, prevention education workshops and parenting skills. Sally is the Coauthor of "KidSafe For Kids" an 8 week curriculum for children ages 4 – 12 and two children’s books "Jack teaches his friends to be KidSafe!" and the 2011 Literary Award Winning children’s book "My Body is Special and Belongs To ME!" Sally was the recipient of 2012 Jefferson Award for Public Service.

Cherie Benjoseph, LCSW, Child Safety Expert, Mental Health Professional, Educator, Author, Public Speaker and Mom -Cherie Benjoseph has been working in the field of social work, specializing in children and families, since 1989. After earning her Masters in Social Work from Boston University Cherie took a position as a public school guidance counselor in Boston. One particular student who shared with Cherie that she was being sexually abused by her step father changed Cherie’s direction and she became focused on prevention education. She trained and specialized in violence prevention/conflict resolution, active parenting skills, and her main focus, personal safety. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BEGIN WRITING? In developing our KidSafe for Kids program we realized the importance of using books to help teach children important life skills.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR AWARD WINNING TITLE? Sally-- (my son named Jack who is almost 13 now) was 4 years old and he asked if he could come with me to teach KidSafe. He said "I want my friends to be safe too" and a light bulb went off and we realized that it would be an incredible way to review our 8 lessons by letting "Jack" teach his friends all the safety skills his parents taught him.

WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU FACE AS AN AUTHOR? The whole process was extremely challenging - however it has been beyond rewarding to receive feedback, awards and reviews from children, parents, teachers, guidance counselors and professionals who love our book and how they have helped them.

One foster parent who received our training and a book shared this:

I want to take a moment to explain what an impact Cherie Benjoseph and the book had on my family, without breaching the confidentiality of my case. After our training class (on Saturday, 1/28/12) I went home and discussed the book with my kids. They were very engaged and asked a lot of questions about "unsafe touches" as well as actions that made them feel confused and uncomfortable. That night they revealed some additional information to me that was not mentioned before in this case. Five days later (at the most inopportune time I might add) the girls revealed a plethora of incidents that they were exposed to. I believe that without the combination of the book and the "poker face" training and me building a trusting relationship with the girls we may have never gotten to this point. I can go on all day talking about how much we love these kids and the actions we take to protect them, but we were missing an extremely important element that could have very easily gone unnoticed. I cannot express how grateful I am that these kids will never be part of the statistics that don’t speak up. I don’t know how I would have reacted to receiving what they were telling me if I wasn’t told to have a poker face and reassure them about how brave they are and how happy I was that they felt like they could trust me with that information. They started the conversation shy and uncomfortable and at the end they were smiling and looked as if a huge load was taken off their shoulders. They were proud of themselves. And now they tell me every little thing that ever happens :) I don’t think that there was ever a lack of trust. I feel that perhaps it never dawned on the girls that these things that happened to them were wrong and needed to be reported. Whatever the reason, I plan to read this book to every child I ever come in contact with. I have already shared it with family, coworkers and friends (but I told them that they had to buy their own!).

Karmack, by J.C. Whyte, earns the Literary Classics Seal of Approval

Sully is the "Big Cheese" of the 5th grade and the greatest bully of his trio of elementary school thugs.  But he and his hoodlum buddies have finally tipped the karmic scale and Sully comes face to face with karma incarnate when Karmack, a whimsical and lovable little character, appears on the scene to set things straight.  Now whenever Sully or his cohorts bully it comes back to them in full karmic force.  When Karmack reveals that doom awaits Sully and his friends if they do not stop bullying, things begin to take an interesting turn at Higgins Elementary School. 

Karmack is a captivating pre-teen fantasy and author J.C. Whyte has created a strong cast of characters that are well developed and quite likable.  As the story progresses, the suspense builds to a delightful outcome that is sure to keep readers anticipating Whyte's next round of literary treasures.  We look forward to seeing more from this author.
