Old Earth, by Gary Grossman, earns the Literary Classics Seal of Approval

In the early 1600s Galileo's views that the earth revolved around the sun were challenged by astronomers. There was a formal inquisition and it was concluded that Galileo's arguments could only be presented as conjecture.  In what was considered an act of heresy, Galileo later published his views, which many believed to be an attack on Pope Urban VIII.  Galileo was tried, and spent the remainder of his life under house arrest.

Fast forward to present day in Gary Grossman's geological thriller Old Earth . . . Dr. Quinn McCauley, a professor of paleontology, along with a team of his top students, are on a dig in Montana where they hope to find some rare dinosaur bones. Instead, they unearth an artifact which defies common logic and challenges Galileo's story as told by historians.  McCauley and a trusted colleague are determined to reveal the truth behind their discovery of this centuries' old conspiracy. But members of a secret society are bent on keeping the world from learning the truth behind Galileo's discovery.

Gary Grossman has authored a gripping thriller which challenges the dogmas of faith and science as they pertain to a world historical viewpoint.  With a fascinating premise and cerebral substratum, this book keeps a steady pace as the author skillfully vacillates between the past and present while challenging long held beliefs within the pages of this compelling novel.

The Crimson Emperor, by Wim Baren, earns the Literary Classics Seal of Approval

The Byzantine era was one of strife, struggle, & war. Battles were frequent and violent.  Life expectancy was short and death was always just around the corner. Accordingly, people seized the opportunity to find enjoyment whenever possible. This was a time when trust was a precious commodity and family was of ultimate importance. The church was incredibly powerful and involved in most everything; and traditions and protocol were of the utmost consideration.

In The Crimson Emperor, author Wim Baren chronicles the lives of a few notable families of the Byzantium Empire. The main characters and families involved in this book are all of the upper classes.  Emperors, some members of the business class and the elite, as well as a few servants add to the mix of colorful personalities woven throughout. The tales are based on fact but are presented in the framework of fiction, making this an incredibly interesting novel.

This is not your typical beach read, (by no means would it be considered “brain candy”) and yet it is hard to put down. The Crimson Emperor is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in history, and in particular that of the Byzantine culture. The story is riveting, the characters vibrant and complex, and the tale often puts the reader on the edge of their seat. Details which seem mildly obscure in the beginning of the book become woven into the fabric of  this story which is supremely well written and comes together seamlessly at its finale.

When he meets a young lady who is new to town the two get off to a rough start, but eventually they become cohorts and come to rely on each other for their ultimate survival.

To Swallow the Earth is a western mystery turned love story. This intensely thrilling novel boasts a healthy dose of action interspersed throughout.  With great skill and finesse, author Karl Beckstrand has brought completion to this book which was a partial manuscript inherited from the late Ransom Wilcox.

Beckstrand’s mastery of the written word provides such tangible moments you can nearly feel blood splashing in the fight scenes in this dramatic novel which is sure to get your adrenaline pumping.  The story transports readers to the magnificent landscapes of Nevada, California, and Montana. Extreme shoot-outs, brawls, and challenges of strength and endurance are sure to keep readers on the edge of their seats. The Gift of Sunderland, by J.E. Rogers, earns the CLC Seal of Approval

Brothers Waylond and Morlund are numbats . . . marsupials indigenous to western Australia.  The two have long been estranged since a tragic accident which tore them apart as young boys.  But now it’s time for the next Guardian in line to be announced and the brothers find themselves in a classic struggle of wanting the same thing knowing that only can have it.

Young readers are sure to love these fanciful characters which are subject to daring adventures. They have relatable problems including family rifts, battles of good and evil, and near death experiences, including a thrilling journey into a volcanic mountain. The book has multiple heroes and genuine personalities we all can recognize.

Author J.E. Rogers paints a vivid picture with a little magic of her own as she conjures delightfully colorful characters and engaging scenarios. Illustrations by Guy Atherfold are marvelous and help to bring these enchanting characters to life.

Provided at the end of the book is an educational introduction to Australian flora and fauna (including the extinct Thylacine).  The descriptions and pictures are a fantastic addition to this book which is both enlightening and entertaining.

We loved the messages tucked neatly within this fantasy fiction adventure: Everyone has problems. No one is perfect . . . but everyone also has their own strengths. And above all, don’t let having made a mistake stop you from moving forward to achieve your dreams.

The Crossings, by Barry Kienzle, earns the Literary Classics Seal of Approval

George Martin, or Georgie, as his friends call him, is an inquisitive and energetic twelve year old boy growing up in the 1930s. Wherever Georgie is you will likely find his best friend Schmitty, who seems to possess a bit more common sense than his counterpart.  Yet more often than not, Georgie seems to wrangle Schmitty into joining him in stirring up trouble of any kind.

So when Georgie decides to hitch the rails from their home-town in northern Kentucky to Louisiana for Mardi Gras, Schmitty’s instincts tell him it’s a bad idea.  But he soon realizes Georgie is determined to go with or without him, so Schmitty decides to tag along.  But things don’t go quite as planned, and soon Georgie finds himself alone and without food, supplies or money.

The Crossings is based on the true story of the author’s father’s personal experience as a young boy.  Author Barry Kienzle brings to life Georgie’s thrilling, but terrifying travels as experienced through the eyes of this daring young man. Young boys especially will relate to Georgie’s thrill-seeking whims. Along the way he has many close calls including run-ins with the notorious railroad “bulls” (hired to keep hobos off the trains), being chased by a gang of ruffians, and finding himself penniless during an era when few had anything to spare.

Despite his dire situation, he encounters people who are willing to help in whatever small ways they can while offering advice to help him along his journey.  While Georgie doesn’t always heed the warnings of others, he does manage to listen and learn from the many people he encounters on his amazing adventure.

The Crossings is highly recommended for home and school libraries and has earned the Literary Classics Seal of Approval.
