To Swallow the Earth earns the Literary Classics Seal of Approval

Wade Foster has returned home after a long absence only to find his ranch has been taken over, his sister is catatonic, and it would appear everyone in town is out to get him. When he meets a young lady who is new to town the two get off to a rough start, but eventually they become cohorts and come to rely on each other for their ultimate survival.

To Swallow the Earth is a western mystery turned love story. This intensely thrilling novel boasts a healthy dose of action interspersed throughout.  With great skill and finesse, author Karl Beckstrand has brought completion to this book which was a partial manuscript inherited from the late Ransom Wilcox.

Beckstrand’s mastery of the written word provides such tangible moments you can nearly feel blood splashing in the fight scenes in this dramatic novel which is sure to get your adrenaline pumping.  The story transports readers to the magnificent landscapes of Nevada, California, and Montana. Extreme shoot-outs, brawls, and challenges of strength and endurance are sure to keep readers on the edge of their seats. While the book does have some strong graphic scenes, for the most part this is a book which we wholeheartedly recommend for mature young readers.

The Crossings, by Barry Kienzle, earns the Literary Classics Seal of Approval

George Martin, or Georgie, as his friends call him, is an inquisitive and energetic twelve year old boy growing up in the 1930s. Wherever Georgie is you will likely find his best friend Schmitty, who seems to possess a bit more common sense than his counterpart.  Yet more often than not, Georgie seems to wrangle Schmitty into joining him in stirring up trouble of any kind.

So when Georgie decides to hitch the rails from their home-town in northern Kentucky to Louisiana for Mardi Gras, Schmitty’s instincts tell him it’s a bad idea.  But he soon realizes Georgie is determined to go with or without him, so Schmitty decides to tag along.  But things don’t go quite as planned, and soon Georgie finds himself alone and without food, supplies or money.

The Crossings is based on the true story of the author’s father’s personal experience as a young boy.  Author Barry Kienzle brings to life Georgie’s thrilling, but terrifying travels as experienced through the eyes of this daring young man. Young boys especially will relate to Georgie’s thrill-seeking whims. Along the way he has many close calls including run-ins with the notorious railroad “bulls” (hired to keep hobos off the trains), being chased by a gang of ruffians, and finding himself penniless during an era when few had anything to spare.

Despite his dire situation, he encounters people who are willing to help in whatever small ways they can while offering advice to help him along his journey.  While Georgie doesn’t always heed the warnings of others, he does manage to listen and learn from the many people he encounters on his amazing adventure.

The Crossings is highly recommended for home and school libraries and has earned the Literary Classics Seal of Approval.

Unveiling the Wizards' Shroud earns the CLC Seal of Approval

Unveiling the Wizards' Shroud is the tale of Owen, a boy who is the likely heir to his father's throne.  But Owen has no desire to become king and dreads the moment when, on his fifteenth birthday,  King Kendrick will most likely announce that he is to be his father's successor.  But when the king becomes ill, Owen's only hope is to turn to Cedric, the wizard who may have been responsible for his mother's death.

Author, Eric Price has crafted a gripping story, full of imagery, that draws the reader into Owen's quest which takes place in a fanciful world of magic and mystery.

My Brother is My Best Friend earns the Literary Classics Seal of Approval

Nicole Weaver has created a new counterpart to her award winning picture book, My Sister is My Best Friend.

My Brother is My Best Friend, is an enjoyable and easy read.  Two playful and inquisitive boys enjoy each other's company as they have fun and explore.  The book is told in three languages, English, Spanish & French.  Each language is highlighted in a different color, allowing the reader to differentiate between the languages.  This is a fun book to read, while at the same time helping readers to become immersed in the different languages.  The powerful bond of twin brothers is an undercurrent to this story, so non-twins would be equally as engaged by this book. 

A glossary and word-search at the back of the book are helpful to teach kids about unfamiliar words used within the body of the book.
