Cascarones, by Sylvia Sanchez Garza, earns the Literary Classics Seal of Approval

Suzy is a young girl growing up in the 60s and 70s in Southern Texas.  Within the orbit of her very large extended Mexican American family, she is surrounded by a network of aunts and uncles, cousins and grandparents, all of whom create a protective nest in which she and her siblings grow and are nurtured.  With a stay-at-home mom and a father who is working to further his education, her immediate family of seven all live together in a humble three-bedroom home, with Suzy and her two sisters sharing a full-sized bed.  When her father announces the family is moving to Houston, Suzy is separated from her extended family along with the many wonderful traditions she's come to embrace as part of who she is.  This heartwarming coming-of-age novel offers a captivating glimpse into the life of one girl as she finds her way through adolescence, into adulthood, while struggling to maintain her cultural identity.  Cascarones, by Sylvia Sanchez Garza, is recommended for home and school libraries and has earned the Literary Classics Seal of Approval.
